Is gelatin Halal?

Gelatin, spelled gelatine in British English, is Halal only when it comes from a Halal source (fish, or an animal slaughtered the Halal way) and that source is confirmed. Most gelatine in Europe is made from pork, and the label does not have to say which animal it came from.

Is gelatin Halal?

Short answer

Not Halal unless the source is confirmed. Gelatine is animal by definition, and European labels do not have to say which animal. Helal Scan flags plain gelatine as not Halal until the pack carries a Halal certification mark or the manufacturer confirms a Halal source.

What gelatine actually is

Gelatine is protein extracted by boiling skin, bone and connective tissue. It sets jelly, gives gummy sweets their chew, stabilises yoghurts and mousses, and clarifies some juices and wines.

On an ingredient list it appears as gelatine, gelatin, Gelatine or as the E-numbers E441 and E428.

Is gelatin pork?

Often, but not always. Most gelatine in Europe is pork, because pigskin is the cheapest raw material; the rest is mainly beef hide and bone. Fish gelatine exists too, and packs usually name it.

The label rarely settles it. European labelling rules require the ingredient to be named. They do not require the animal it came from. So "gelatine" on a German pack may be pork, may be beef, and the pack will not say. Only pork gelatine or Schweinegelatine on the pack, or the maker's own answer, tells you for certain.

Gummy sweets are the best-known case. HARIBO told us in writing that its products sold in Germany that contain gelatine use mainly pork-rind gelatine: which Haribo sweets contain gelatin, product by product.

Is beef gelatin Halal?

Only when the cattle were slaughtered the Halal way and that is confirmed. Beef gelatine or Rindergelatine on a pack answers the species question, not the slaughter question, and a label from an uncertified supplier cannot answer the second one.

So Helal Scan treats beef gelatine as not Halal unless the pack carries a Halal certification mark or the maker confirms a Halal source. Some scholars hold that processing changes gelatine enough to change its ruling (see below), and the app shows that view beside the result rather than deciding it for you.

What is Halal gelatin?

Halal gelatin comes from animals slaughtered the Halal way, usually cattle, or from fish, and is produced under a Halal certifier's supervision. It exists and some brands use it, and that certification is the thing worth looking for.

Where the word appears matters. A Halal certification mark on the pack clears the gelatine in Helal Scan. The word printed only inside the ingredient list, as in "Halal gelatine", is the maker's own description, so the app shows it as doubtful until the certification is confirmed.

What scholars say

The mainstream position is that gelatine takes the ruling of its source: from a pig it is impermissible, from cattle it depends on the slaughter. A minority position holds that istihalah, the chemical transformation during processing, changes the substance enough to change its ruling. That view is a real one held by respected scholars, and it is also a minority one.

Helal Scan does not pick a side for you. It reports what the ingredient is and where it came from when that is known, and it says plainly when it is not known.

Fish and plant alternatives

Fish gelatine is made from fish skin and is widely accepted; the app does not flag it. Pectin, agar-agar, carrageenan and starch are plant gelling agents and raise no animal-source question at all. Sweets set with pectin are increasingly common, and the pack usually says so, because it is a selling point.

Common questions

Does gelatin contain pork?

Not always. Gelatin is made from pork, beef or fish, and in Europe most often from pork. The pack only tells you when it names the source, as in "pork gelatine" or "beef gelatine"; plain "gelatine" is usually pork or beef.

Is E441 Halal?

E441 is gelatine. Treat it as not Halal unless the pack carries a Halal certification mark or the maker confirms a Halal source. Helal Scan marks it not Halal by default.

Is kosher gelatin Halal?

Not automatically. Kosher certification answers different questions from Halal certification, and a kosher mark does not show that the animal was slaughtered the Halal way. Helal Scan does not treat a kosher mark as Halal.

Are marshmallows Halal?

Most contain pork or beef gelatine. Some are made with fish gelatine or pectin and say so on the pack. Scan the barcode and the app shows what the declaration says.

Is gelatine in medicine capsules Halal?

The same reasoning applies to capsule shells, though many scholars allow medicines where no alternative exists. Ask your pharmacist for a vegetarian capsule if it matters to you.
