Is Haribo Halal?
We asked HARIBO about its sweets sold in Germany and HARIBO answered in writing. This page lists every HARIBO and MAOAM product we hold that answer for, from Goldbären gummy bears to sour sweets, whether it contains gelatin, and what that means.
Short answer
In Germany, only some. Of the 116 HARIBO and MAOAM products we hold HARIBO's answer for, 26 are confirmed (HARIBO listed them as containing neither gelatine nor ethanol as an auxiliary ingredient), 47 are not Halal (they contain gelatine, mainly from pork according to HARIBO) and 43 still Doubtful (HARIBO says some flavourings use ethanol as a carrier).
Which gelatin does Haribo use?
HARIBO told us in writing that its products sold in Germany that contain gelatine are made mainly with pork-rind gelatine. All 47 products listed under “Haram” below are there for this reason: each one contains gelatine. HARIBO listed the 26 confirmed products as containing neither gelatine nor ethanol as an auxiliary ingredient; those are the ones to look for if you avoid pork gelatine.
Are Haribo Goldbears (Goldbären) Halal?
No. All 11 Goldbären and Gummibärchen packs we hold HARIBO's answer for contain gelatine, so they are listed as Haram, among them HARIBO Goldbären 360 g, HARIBO Gummibärchen 200 g, HARIBO Goldbären Himbeer sortenrein, HARIBO Saft Goldbären. HARIBO says the gelatine in its products sold in Germany is mainly pork-rind gelatine.
Halal gummy bears: what to look for
Gummy bears can be Halal when they are set without gelatine, for example with pectin or starch, or with certified Halal gelatine, when the flavouring question is answered, and when nothing else on the list is flagged, such as carmine (E120) for colour or shellac (E904) as a glaze. A Halal certification mark on the pack answers both. A vegan mark answers the gelatine question but not the flavouring one, so the app can still show such a pack as Doubtful. Why does a Haribo product say “Doubtful”?
Because the flavouring is still open. HARIBO told us some flavourings use ethanol as a carrier, without saying which products. Until HARIBO confirms a product, we cannot call it Halal.
